These “singles” are culled from the same sessions that brought forth “The Sound Of Who We Are“. More syrupy rock tunes from the synapses of Norfolk’s sassiest breakfast slinger, Elliott Malvas. Across roughly ten minutes, expect to get caught up in the trademark YJ bounce & strum.
FFO: Beauty Pill’s “The Unsustainable Lifestyle“, Swervedriver’s “99th Dream”
Good Dog Nigel‘s debut 12″ is steady rolling off of merch tables as they continue showing up on stage after stage. Word from our partners at Infinite Repeats is that the official (full color) jackets should be shipping out any day now. This also means the deluxe editions that many of you have been waiting for will also be hitting the mailboxes soon. If you haven’t check out this party, what gives?
This digital EP by You’re Jovian drops on the first Friday of April! It’s the rest of the work Elliott did up in Philly during the sessions for “The Sound Of Who We Are” last year. Look for it at all the usual online troughs (Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, & of course, bandcamp).
“autremonde: The Collected Commercials Of Death”
The other digital release from HSAL next month. This full-length (clocking in at nearly 80 minutes) is the result of over a decade’s worth of heart & soul from one of the most reclusive friends of the label. Andres Mementomori stirs up memories of late 70’s Eno, mid-80’s Gabriel, & “The Drift” by Scott Walker. Vocals are scarce but emotions run high throughout this journey. The entire palette will present itself on April 19th. Oh, & you can preview a cut from this album in the soundcloud player on the left-hand side of the screen. ( <——— )
This summer, HSAL has the honor of partnering with Virginia Beach soundsmith Oahu (sonic moniker of cartoonist Todd Webb) for a duel EP release. The 2CD collection will prove to be the stuff of legend. On the first disc, Webb works out soundscapes based on source material provided by Deerhoof guitarist John Dieterich! The second disc will contain a highlights set of “daily bleeps” curated by Webb himself! NOTE: Not sure what daily bleeps are? Get educated here…this series is one of the things that first endeared us to Oahu’s output.
Yup, this one’s gonna SLAY! The LP is tracked & the band is in the throes of mixing these nine cuts down. Nothing concrete (at least nothing we can officially announce yet) but it looks like the release party for this one, slated for a weekend just shy of peak color on the trees, should prove to be coolest party of the year. We know – bold prediction. That’s how much we believe in this record.
October’s been GREAT! Lynchstock turned out to be everything we could have hoped for. Thanks to all the people who caught our acts, bought our records, took RAD photos/videos & shared them across social media. We should have a festival recap up soon (waiting on imagery from our staff photographers…).
The month capped off with the release of HSAL #46, which is the latest EP from Norfolk’s You’re Jovian. A quick east coast tour to support the record ended with a celebration down in their hometown. local support Berries, labelmates TLVS & HSAL alums Long Division filled out the bill for a wonderful evening. We were able to capture a moment from the show…
Up next, honeybrandy is doing a couple of shows this weekend with Philly space music vets Soporus:

Lynchstock is less than two weeks out & we’re getting really psyched! We have worked out some really neat visual effects to accompany the killer acts that will grace the Harding Street Assembly Stage (see schedule below). Additionally, we are working with the artists to set up a shop at our merch tent. You’ll be able to score HSAL titles on the cheap during the festival. Rumor has it that one lucky fan will win an HSAL “care package” (TEN of our latest releases including vinyl, CD’s & cassettes) from your friendly neighborhood record label…
Tickets (including VIP access) are on sale now! Hope to see TONS of friends there.
There is SO, SO much going on here at your friendly neighborhood record label that it is truly difficult to keep all of our thoughts & dreams in order, but we’re trying as hard as we can! With more of 2018 behind us than before us, we figured it was high time to drop a dime on everything that we have in store for the rest of this, another stellar year for HSAL!
First off, pre-orders are now open for HSAL #46 – the new 12″ EP from Virginia Beach’s You’re Jovian! “The Sound Of Who We Are” is comprised of a five-song set captured up in Philly with studio wizard du jour Jeff Zeigler. Artwork was assembled with the aid of Doug Nicholson (Long Division). The physical copy will be a one-sided 12″ on cut on clear wax. We are also working out some cool companion pieces to ship with these EP’s. Needless to say we are ecstatic for this batch of tunes & how the project is turning out. Additional warm fuzzies for the chance to work with Elliott. Stay tuned…
Also debuting today (08/17/18) is “Learn To Love“, the new single from Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon! This track, cut live at Glass Village Studios with Tim Riordan (Atlas Rhoads), features a delicate yet potent trip through Harmon’s emotion. Tools employed include acoustic piano, cello, & that voice. THAT VOICE! The cover art features a self-portrait selected from Harmon’s ever-growing portfolio. Our hope is that you will find “Learn” (cataloged as HSAL #47) as entrancing as we have. It’s available for stream at the usual outlets & for “pay what you want” download via HSAL bandcamp…
As many of you are aware, HSAL #44 is going to be this year’s entry in the ongoing “Lynchstock” compilation, where we thematically celebrate our hometown’s music festival. The summer has brought a litany of changes & amendments to the original set, but we are super thrilled to have landed where we did on this one! Five local acts (L.A.Dies, Overlook Hotel, TLVS, Quick On My Feet, & Good Dog Nigel) are dropping new never-before-released material tracked up in Richmond with Allen Bergendahl (Shy Low, Jonathan Vassar, TONS of other Virginia acts). Additionally, they are covering bands from the Hill City’s past (Swirl, Brian Hall/Snake Forcefield, A New Dawn Fades, Vroom, & Order). It has been such a blast to make this complete labor of love. There’s already talks of a second volume. Physical copies (CD) will be available on October 20th at the festival with digital copies available shortly thereafter…
Finally, we are still shipping copies of our summer releases (while they last)! Opin just finished tickling the ears of fans across the southeast in support of their “Drifters” EP (HSAL #43). The 12″ jackets were screen printed by Virginia Svengali Thomas Dean. HSAL #41, which doesn’t hit the streets until the 24th features an engaging electronic journey led by trail masters Benjamin Mauch & Oahu, both of whom have spent most of the year supporting their myriad of visual & sonic projects…
Our latest signing, You’re Jovian, just submitted tracks for their upcoming 12″ (HSAL #46). This go around, Elliott took his new jams up to Philadelphia to capture them with Jeff Zeigler (War On Drugs, Nothing, Kurt Vile) at Uniform Recording. If all goes well, this follow-up to last year’s “They Were Selected & Divided” will be out on clear wax before the clocks roll back an hour.
Our resident visual artist, Joanna McGlothlin, has been commissioned to create artwork for an upcoming CD release for the music group at Grace Church.
TLVS has just been announced as part of the lineup for the sixth annual Lynchstock Music Festival! 2018 will make the band’s fourth appearance on one of our town’s most exciting stages.
Good Dog Nigel, June 2018
Next weekend, HSAL is taking a few local acts up Richmond way to begin tracking tunes for HSAL #44! For the last few years, we have released a compilation at Lynchstock. This year, we are upping our game. Twelve tracks comprised of six Lynchburg based bands. Each band (Great Health, Overlook Hotel, Good Dog Nigel, TLVS, Quick On My Feet, & Trouvere) will present a new, unreleased original & a cover of a project from the Hill City’s past (Herschel, Snake Forcefield/Brian Hall, Order Of The Dying Orchid, A New Dawn Fades, Vroom, & Hi Ho Six Shooter!). If the demos that have been turned in to date are any indication, this will be a very special release. The sessions will be engineered & co-produced by long-time HSAL bud Allen Bergendahl, who has manned boards for a truckload of VA bands over the years.
