HSAL #16 (Split 10″ #1)

TLVS & Long Division

HSAL #16: TLVS / long division split 10″ EP $15 PPD

*this is the first of our split 10″ series. the idea is to feature one of our own on the A side, with a friend of the label holding down the B side.*

the late virginia summers (TLVS) present one of their most impressive (as well one of their oldest) moments with the drone of “heather majestic purple”, then finish the offering with a recent creation (“matisse”) penned specifically for this EP. norfolk’s long division hand in a couple of pieces written during the creation of their self-released “calm before”. “transmogrifier” is loaded with memorable hooks & passages, while “tragic colors” is a darker trail, replete with perfectly placed layers of feedback & wash. this b side also features the final sessions of long division in their “classic” lineup.

a handful of things.

first, a huge “THANK YOU” to any & all who made it out to the good cherry last night. we were able to help out the venue in a big way. we are hoping that all of the winter weather is over & done with by the 19th, when they host local indie rock stars quick on my feet & williamsburg’s goodwill falcon.

second, the good word on our first records seem to be coming from parts near & far. we have just received another favorable review of HSAL #02 from mid-atlantic art critic blog the zenith. you can read the entire write up here.

finally, we are still keeping finger crossed on the TLVS show with charlottesville’s astronomers this saturday night. this date, 02/06 @ rivermont pizza, is a rescheduled show from december’s snowstorm. as we get details on this show, we will keep you informed…

TLVS blurb on hip space rock blog.

the folks over at the decibel tolls have posted some kind words about the late virginia summers. they also managed to pair music from HSAL #02 with a really great old postcard.

we just received word that TLVS is also working out a few shows around virginia & north carolina in the coming weeks, beginning with a performance at the good cherry in forest on the 28th.

recent comings & goings

…so, the new year is only a weekend old & HSAL has already begun to make progress in 2010! first off, TLVS has continued working on their upcoming full length, entitled “porcelain”. so far, the album is about 85% completed, with the final pieces slated to come together by valentine’s day. the album has seen some progress in the duo’s output, with three new pieces that, to date, have never been played in a live setting. word is that some of this new material will find its way into their set at the end of the month, when they share an evening with cj boyd. we are hoping to have the 12″ wrapped up & ready to head off to the press in april.

virgineola, who are working on the b side to their upcoming split 7″ with the cj boyd sextet, have been offered the chance to score “hamlet”…well, sort of. as a part of their annual summer festival season, endstation theatre company have taken on the task of retelling the classic shakespearean tale through the filter of southern reconstruction era farm life. the group will not only be assembling music for the show, they will be performing as a part of the performance. this paring of professional theater & the group’s rustic post-rock vibe is already shaping up to be something really special. we are crossing our fingers on the ability to bootleg this one!

finally, we are looking to put together a small series of digital only releases that feature some of the fantastic work we are hearing from ’round our parts. our hope is to continue building on the fertile soil that our community has become. if you, or some artist you know, calls central virginia or north carolina home, & you want to get in on this series, hit us up – hardingstreet@gmail.com.

cover art for HSAL 02

HSAL 02: TLVS, “Pebble Azalea Starfish” b/w “Golden Cypress” $5 PPD
This single marks the first recordings of The Late Virginia Summers (TLVS) in their current two piece incarnation. “Pebble” features a trademark Joe Morgan rift pushing through cascading layers of electric guitars & phased out organs. The flow of “Golden Cypress” resembles a hazy west coast sunset, with a low end groove dissolving into an ocean of guitar washes. Both sides were tracked & mixed at the Harding Street Assembly Lab by the band.
