IT’S FINALLY HERE (sort of)! HSAL #43, the new EP from Richmond’s Opin, is now available for stream & download via Bandcamp (NOTE: Other streaming outlets will begin carrying the EP very shortly). We have received word that the physical copy (one-sided 12″ cut into clear wax) will be delayed by a few weeks, but anticipate shipping copies out around Mother’s Day. All purchases (digital & physical) include a pair of additional tracks that the band cut up in Philly with Jeff Zeigler during the sessions for “Drifters“.
Recently, Landis & Tori connected with The All Scene Eye for an in-depth chat around the maturity curve of the band, how songs translate live, & what influenced the assembly of “Drifters“. Read all about it here!
Opin will be hitting the road in support of HSAL #43 this spring. Keep up with their dates, as well as the entire HSAL roster on our live performances page!
HSAL #43: Opin, “Drifters” EP ** RELEASES 04/20/2018 **
The musical output of frontman Landis Wine was one of the embers that stoked HSAL into existence back in 2009. The label blossomed & matured alongside of Wine’s White Laces (The relationship birthed two small run cassettes & a special edition of their first EP). Fast forward to 2018…Wine’s new project, Opin, was seeking out a new home for a new collection of tunes tracked up in Philadelphia at Jeff Zeigler‘s Uniform Recording the previous summer.
Fresh off the heels of their impressive debut (2017’s self-titled LP on RVA’s Egghunt), Landis Wine & Tori Hovater have returned with a stable lineup & a potent, focused batch of jams, including their take on a traditional Japanese festival tune, “Shinzo No Tobira“. We had a small run of one-sided 12” records lathe cut into clear wax. The band will have these on their spring & summer dates while supplies last.

Mauch‘s been solidifying his rig for the past several months, parcing out “neat gadgets” from the “gear that takes my set to the next level”. With a smaller footprint & bigger sound, Ben is starting down the path to new sounds. Rumor has him branching out later this year with a new tape (more details as they surface). In the meantime, check this new piece, “Digital Burden” that was just leaked via Soundcloud. #therealchill
honeybrandy was part a wonderful evening of “out” sounds in Richmond last week. Hosted by “the Colloquial Orchestra” & organized by Cherub Records‘ PJ Sykes, the bill also included Amplifier On Fire, Lunar (who are really great!) & a Sykes’ led “house band” that recently supported Jandek at his RVA tour stop.
Joey & Nathan were able to capture their set with some lo-fi gear (thanks to Ben Mauch for manning the “record” button). You can stream the entire set over at our soundcloud page.
HSAL #17: white laces / the snowy owls split 10″ EP $15 PPD
*this is the second of our split 10″ series. the idea is to feature one of our own on the A side, with a friend of the label holding down the B side.*
this RVA centric release showcases some of the finest tunes from the current live set of white laces. the lead single, “hands in mexico”, was leaked online & taken to by just about every hip east coast blog. the rest of the A side leans towards new potential for the four piece. capital city up & comers the snowy owls turn in their own super hot single (“could”, featuring a killer boy/girl call & response chorus), as well as three other scorchers from their live set, which has been earning the group great shows around the mid-atlantic for nearly a year.
AVAILABILITY: marbled brown vinyl + digital download, limited run of 100
