LIVE HSAL Happening this Spring!

JLH 032418

Buds are blooming across our beloved hill city, we are gearing up for lots of cool shows happening downtown. These dates are going down at Speakertree (901 Jefferson St #G7, 24504)

  • 03/24: Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon (full band!) w/ B.A.Scott
  • 04/06: TLVS w/ You’re Jovian (1ST FRIDAY w/ Jacob Laverty exhibit)

We are also working on a local date to celebrate the release of the new Opin EP (HSAL #43), which is still available for pre-order. Inventory counts are getting low on this one. If you are into this brand of interesting, catch indie rock (if you’re reading this, you most likely are), don’t wait for the 04/20 release date…

…oh, & if you happen to be out east this weekend, honeybrandy & Benjamin Mauch are playing a right killer showcase for the ninth annual SPAZZ Fest in downtown Greenville NC on Sunday, 03/25.

As for other “stuff”, we are working on something really rad for this fall. Let’s just say that HSAL is hoping to be a big part of what has become a local hallmark as the leaves begin to change…more on that later.

YEAR IN RECAP: 2017

First Quarter (01/01 – 03/31): HSAL was hard at work making the honeybrandy debut LP happen. Mastering, artwork, & determining a release date. Details began to materialize around Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon‘s debut EP. We were in the throes of collaboration with several artists from ’round the Commonwealth (and a few from the surrounding states) for our yearly Lynchstock comp. Decision was that it would be all covers. Submissions began to appear in the Dropbox. We were stoked!

Second Quarter (04/01 – 06/30): The fifth annual Lynchstock Music Festival was to take place on Saturday, April 22nd in our hometown. HSAL was able to book the early afternoon slots for one of the stages with a number of electronic/experimental artists from ’round the mid-Atlantic. By 3PM, the festival was officially called due to inclement weather, but not before Oahu, Leaaves, & honeybrandy cast spells over the soggy crowd.

As the spring was winding down, HSAL embarked on the ambitious task of resurfacing the work of local legend Brian Hall & Outside Records. Beginning in mid-May, we digitally presented an album (streaming only) from one of Hall’s many projects every Wednesday. This happened for ten consecutive weeks, with a final outtakes/live/compilation tracks collection dropping in early August. HSAL #31 & #37 were sent off to press to meet release dates of August & October (respectively).

Third Quarter (07/01 – 09/30): HSAL carved out an opportunity to partner with poet/artist Steve Scott one his first release of new material since 1998. Over many an email & Dropbox link, Nathan went back & forth with Scott on artwork, liner notes, & the release date, which eventually landed in early October to coincide with his Australian lecture tour. HSAL also repressed HSAL #32, the out-of-print debut full-length from Benjamin Mauch.

Jeremiah’s debut EP dropped on 08/04. We planned a release show for later in August to allow for college students’ attendance. The show, a completely sold-out affair, was wonderful. Assuming magic was going to pour forth from the stage, we recorded the set..

Fourth Quarter (10/01 – 12/31): SO, SO MUCH! the honeybrandy release party at a downtown art house with the group inviting Todd Webb (electronics) & Bob Pence (reeds) to sit in for a special set. HSAL #38 staying in the experimental top 40 on bandcamp for a month upon its release on it’s way to becoming the best-selling HSAL title to date. KillGXXD turning in a stellar introduction to the HSAL camp while working on a proper debut (due out early 2018!). TLVS finishing up work on their new EP, which represents their first recordings as the trio. Oh, they played a couple shows with Sound of Ceres too! We finished off the year by releasing a live EP from (you guessed it) Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon’s release show.

HSAL #39: Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, “Live At The Old City Cemetery

To celebrate the release of HSAL #31, Jeremiah drove down to Lynchburg (where his debut EP was recorded) to reconnect with friends. The result a packed house, some stellar opening support (Wesley Montgomery, BRNES), & an hour of Harmon casting spells with his voice. A KILLER memory for sure.
Your friendly neighborhood record label took it upon ourselves to capture the set, edit it down to a roughly thirty-minute collection of jams, get the mix mastered, & deliver this gift to ears near & far. Contained within this document are seven performances (a single from the debut EP, a Roberta Flack cover, & five new pieces), the excitement of a supportive crowd, the squeaking of pews, & the occasional train pushing past the Chapel.

Thanks to the Old City Cemetery & Arboretum for use of this incredible space.

As the first official weekend of autumn gets underway, we here at HSAL wanted to share how happy we are at the level of interest in all of our recent (& not so recent) releases. Now that most of our 2017 releases are in house, we’ve been dropping off armloads of packages to the local post office. It’s been great to see HSAL action shipping out to points the world over (looking at you, Australia!). the support you continue to show us around new sounds from Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, Steve Scott, honeybrandy, & more melts our hearts.

We are days away from restocking HSAL #32 & will be reopening sales for Ben’s full-length as soon as those creamsicle colored cassettes are in our possession. Oh, & we’re still working out plans to make 2018 just as wild as 2017 has played out. We’re partnering with some folks for 12″ remix EP from our Carolina buds Band & The Beat. We’re staying on Mr. Roots to finish up the HSAL debut for KillGXXD (some of his work is available in the NEW COMP over on the left-hand side of this page). Speaking of the new streaming comp, there are samples from most of our new releases, as well as live cuts from Jeremiah & friend to the label Lucid You (a super soulful take on shoegaze. Oh, & this guy’s voice? #toomuch). Plenty more action to gossip about as details materialize…

The Goings On!

HONEYBRANDY!

With their debut LP arriving to the HSAL offices in a few weeks, Joey & Nathan are prepping for an eventful fall in support of “Deaf Sharp“. Their local release show will be at the Schewel Theater in the Riverviews Bldg on Friday, October 6th. The evening begins with Long Live The Pilot (they helped out with honeybrandy’s Cocteau Twins cover for HSAL #36) playing the Craddock-Terry Gallery from 6P – 8P for “First Friday”. The show gets under way immediately following First Friday. Todd Webb will open the evening with an Oahu set, then will be one of the guests who sit in with honeybrandy. There will be a cash/card bar during the show & Speakertree will be selling deluxe editions of “Deaf Sharp”.

Look for more dates announced throughout the fall & winter. To give you an idea of what these shows will sound/feel like, honeybrandy have been capturing snippets of their recent rehearsals:

JEREMIAH LLOYD HARMON!

We are currently working with Jeremiah to book an East Coast tour in March. Stay tuned for dates as they are confirmed! Still haven’t heard his debut EP? Tony Rinaldi, who plays Moog on the EP calls these tunes “among the most mind-blowing stuff I’ve heard.” Pick up a copy of HSAL #31 here

BENJAMIN MAUCH!

We have made a second run of cassettes for Ben’s gorgeous full-length, “Golden Bay Garden” (HSAL #32)! This time around, it’s solid orange shells with ice white printing on the sides. Ben will have these for sale when he plays the Bazaar in Roanoke on the 16th. We should have them on the bandcamp site around the same time.

STEVE SCOTT!

Pre-orders for Steve’s new full-length, “Cross My Heat” (first new material in nearly two decades!), will begin on Friday, 09/15. Steve will be taking copies with him for his upcoming dates in Australia. Look for the CD to be available stateside in October.

Well, that happened…

There are moments when you can’t help but feel like the stars have aligned & have graced you with something magical. The evening of August 25th, 2017 was just such a moment for everyone who managed to squeeze into the Old City Cemetery Chapel in Lynchburg VA. The opening support was a showcase of the talent brewing in the Hill CIty scene (BRNES, Wesley Montgomery). Once Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon & his accompaniment took to the stage, the room seemed to inhale in suspense. Harmon worked through an hour plus of original material with a few covers wedged in for good measure. Though he spent most of the set with guitar in hand, Jeremiah brought the evening to a close on the highest of notes by taking to chapel’s piano for his final two numbers.

For those of you who missed out (#yourloss), we present the trio’s take on a Roberta Flack cut:
