YOU GUYS!!! We have made it to TEN YEARS! Across 49 releases (vinyl, CD, cassette & digital), we’ve fostered a community of independent artists that have both participated in & represented our commonwealth’s music scene. Now, it’s time to celebrate! We wanted to make our 50th catalog entry something wild, so we’re staging a huge party. Here’s what we have planned:
DATE: Saturday, September 28th
LOCATION: Warehouse Theater, Academy Center For The Arts
This event is something we dreamed up with help from our friends at the Academy Center. We are still working out arrangements on some extraspecial things for the day, but wanted to get this party on everyone’s radar as soon as possible. Stay tuned for more details as we get them confirmed!
As the first official weekend of autumn gets underway, we here at HSAL wanted to share how happy we are at the level of interest in all of our recent (& not so recent) releases. Now that most of our 2017 releases are in house, we’ve been dropping off armloads of packages to the local post office. It’s been great to see HSAL action shipping out to points the world over (looking at you, Australia!). the support you continue to show us around new sounds from Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, Steve Scott, honeybrandy, & more melts our hearts.
We are days away from restocking HSAL #32 & will be reopening sales for Ben’s full-length as soon as those creamsicle colored cassettes are in our possession. Oh, & we’re still working out plans to make 2018 just as wild as 2017 has played out. We’re partnering with some folks for 12″ remix EP from our Carolina buds Band & The Beat. We’re staying on Mr. Roots to finish up the HSAL debut for KillGXXD (some of his work is available in the NEW COMP over on the left-hand side of this page). Speaking of the new streaming comp, there are samples from most of our new releases, as well as live cuts from Jeremiah & friend to the label Lucid You (a super soulful take on shoegaze. Oh, &this guy’s voice? #toomuch). Plenty more action to gossip about as details materialize…
we are super jazzed to finally have these together! as soon as the ink dries on the front cover art for the rest of HSAL #16, we will be shipping all pre-orders. we will be throwing some extras in each package as a way of saying thanks for the obscene amount of patience we have required of you.
up next on the HSAL docket (in case you hadn’t heard) is the debut release from a long time friend of the lab, herizon. oh, & our next compilation, HSAL #21, which should be arriving from the presses soon. oh, & we are working on an “event” for the fall semester that should include most every HSAL artist as well as a dozen or so additional hand-picked acts…STAY TUNED!
– White Laces: our RVA darlings are SUPER busy these days. they skipped SXSW in lieu of working out ideas for their upcoming full-length. they have been accepted to this year’s MACRoCk festival (04/06 & 07, harrisonburg va) & will be playing with the likes of creepoid, lower dens, & big troubles! they are currently playing shows in support of HSAL #17 & a recently released split 7″ with arches (worthless junk).
– TLVS: they made it back from SXSW in one piece! they will be playing out this spring in support of HSAL #16, which should be shipping out from the lab in the final days of march. joe & nathan are continuing to work out new ideas, building off of “eid mar”, which will appear on the upcoming 12″ comp. their self-imposed goal is to have a new record done by summer’s end.
– Virgineola: stripped down to a four piece (with the occasional guest), virgineola are actively working out sound ideas for their role in this summer’s re-telling of shakespeare’s macbeth. a recent performance to support endstation theatre’s upcoming season proved to be a successful test run for the new line up, as reverb drench banjo, electric drones, simple synth driven low-end, & brushed percussion echoed through sold out auditorium. highlights from their 2010 run with “hamlet” can still be downloaded for free here.
as many of you know, our record label has grown out of our love for art. joanna (who has designed & created nearly all the pacakging for TLVS releases) will be opening her “found” exhibit in richmond this weekend. we are really excited about getting this show on the road, as it has been well received in our home town. joanna’s work, which will include stand alone pieces & more functional items such as clocks made from used drum heads, will be on display throughout the month of february at the harrison street coffee shop. you can find all of the specifics about the show here.
UPDATE: so…joanna’s show has been seemingly sabotaged by the weather. we have worked it out with the kind folks at the coffee shop & the show will go on the walls in march.
